How is allowing wine to be sold in Grocery stores going to increase the amount of money raised for the state government? The current residents of Tennessee who drink wine are already buying it at retail stores. Is this estimate suggesting that grocery stores are going to convert non drinkers into drinkers or is this estimate suggesting that it will increase the amount that current drinkers consume? Are the Grocery stores going to move people who drink wine into Tennessee?
I understand that opening up a new store obviously will raise some money, but that is just filling the pipeline so to speak. Once the initial orders are filled, the amount of product sold is not going to increase significantly without other factors affecting it.
Is the estimated amount of tax money used in this article the actual amount that is already being raised? By my calculations, the Grocery stores would have to buy an additional $540 Million worth of wine from the distributors. If Grocery Stores mark up wine around 20 percent, they would still have to generate sales of $650 Million without affecting the sales of a single retail store that currently sells wine. In a recession, how are the residents of Tennessee going to come up with an additional $650 Million to spend on wine?

I have a question. While the idea of accessibility of wine in grocery stores is extremely appealing, has anyone realized that every single beverage/package store is locally owned? This means that you could pick up a box of mac 'n' cheese and a bottle of Sutter Home; but that would be one step closer to pushing money out of the community and into the corporate model. Then the whole money thing is de-mystified. You would actually be removing money from the local community, thus bringing yourself down. No one person can own more than one liquor store in Tennessee. How many people would you be putting out of a job just so you could buy a $5 bottle of wine for $4.49? Is it really worth it (to the community) to save fifty cents? Do you want to really see a recession in middle TN? Try to pass that law. When the economy tanks, don't cry.

It would be wrong to change alcohol laws just to help the bottom line of newspapers. Every so often, industries go through a period of "creative destruction" - like the newspaper business is today.

But the Tennessee legislature does not owe the newspaper business anything. A temporary increase in ad sales (from additonal ad pages about wine) won't save a failing business model in the 21st century. But the result would be a free-for-all in the alcohol retailing business, perhaps leading to chain liquor stores and liquor in grocery stores.

"...so Bookpeople and Waterloo called in CivicEconomics, a consultancy. They went through the books and found that for every $100 spent at the two locals, $45 stayed in Austin in wages to loca staff, payments to other local merchants, and so on. When that sum went to a typical Borders store, only $13 went back into circulation locally." - from The Economist, August 1st, 2009, p. 28.

The article goes on to explain the "local multiplier" effect.

Here's where the mega-grociers are getting tricky.

If the liquor stores can sell ice, mixers, and "the like" - then who is going to make the definitions? According to this post, it will be the grocery retailers who will "gladly let" the liquor stores sell other products. Nice to know who is going to be deciding Tennessee laws.

So just break out your cookbooks, gang, because the following logic should be enough to get every legislator in Tennessee to wake up and smell the coffee and Bailey's.

The following items are mixers:

Milk, Coffee, Orange Juice, Clam Juice, Eggs, Sugar, Powdered Sugar, Salt, Cranberry Juice, Pomegranate Juice, Olive Juice, Lemon Juice, Lime Juice, Pineapple Juice, Tomato Juice, Beef Broth, Coconut Milk, Coca-Cola, Sprite, Ginger Ale, Club Soda, Tonic Water, Sugar Syrup, Bitters, Grapefruit Juice, Worcesteshire Sauce, Tobasco Sauce, Horseradish, Pepper, Half and Half, and more.

The following items are used as garnishes:

Lemons, Limes, Oranges, Pineapples, Apples, Grapes, Mint Leaves, Celery, Olives, Blue Cheese, Cinnamon, Pepper Flakes, Whipped Cream, Cocoa Powder, Powdered Sugar, Celery Salt, Old Bay Seasoning, Cherries, Minced Coconut, Jalpenos, Cucumbers, and of coure more.

This is where the slippery slope begins. If liquor stores are selling food items then every grocery store could be a liquor store. That's what the grociers meant when they rewrote the bills to allow chain liquor stores - it would make every gas station and grocery store in Tennessee into a liquor store. I'm sure the Red, White & Food lobby will say, "But that's not what we want!" but lobbyists are paid do DO things, not to KNOW things. The big grocery chains and the families behind them don't live in Tennessee and could not care less what happens here. They sell liquor in any state it is allowed and would gladly take the profits. This is what they want.

And gas stations will do what makes money, period. They sell all sorts of stuff to the poor and underclass that don't have any redeeming value at all. They would LOVE to put pints of Jim Beam right next to the cigarettes and other items they sell.

It doesn't take a genius to see where this sort of irresponsible behavior would lead in a few years. I don't see how any thinking person could be in support of this.

Are you guys going to delete this post too?

That is ridiculous. There is no movement to put liquor in grocery stores and I'm certain states that allow wine sales in grocery stores have liquor stores that are thriving.
